Jonathan Gruber studied architecture, economics, communication and journalism in Aachen, Passau, Hamburg and Zurich. He holds a BA from the University of Passau and an MA from the University of Hamburg in Journalism and Communication Sciences. Jonathan joined the Internet Use and Society division at the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ) as a research and teaching assistant in fall 2019. He is interested in why people use digital information technologies and what impact this has on society. Against the background of an increasing discussion on the role of algorithms in the production and distribution of information, Jonathan's dissertation focuses on people's awareness and understanding of algorithms. What do people know about them? How do they perceive them? How does this influence their opinions and use of products and services based on algorithms?
