Senior Research and Teaching Associate (PostDoc)

with a focus on Political Communication

The Department of Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich is one of the leading international research institutions in its field. This Postdoc position is within the group “International and Comparative Media Research” led by Professor Frank Esser. The group is particularly interested in how processes of political communication develop and differ internationally depending on the conditions of the information environments surrounding them.

We welcome applications of candidates interested in international developments in political communication. We have a broad understanding of political communication and find connections to related fields particularly exciting, such as technology, user behavior and participation, digital journalism and news, as well as transformations in media systems and democracy. Candidates with strong competencies in computational methods, interest in comparative research, and knowledge of non-Western media systems are especially welcome. Successful candidates will be expected to develop their own research, collaborate with members of the group, and contribute to teaching. The position is on a fixed term basis of 3 years and can be extended to 6 years.

Your profile

  • Very good doctoral degree in Communication Studies or neighboring discipline
  • Proven research and teaching competence in the broad field of political communication (or its connections to adjacent fields)
  • Very good knowledge of theories in Communication Studies
  • Strong interest in comparative international communication research and media systems beyond the West
  • Advanced skills in quantitative methods of empirical social science
  • Advanced skills in text as data methods and R; additional skills in Python an asset
  • Analytical skills and capacity for independent, internationally visible research
  • Enthusiasm for working in teams
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in German is desirable but not required

  • The position is available immediately. Expected starting date is 1 February 2022 or by agreement.
  • The position is initially limited to three years and can be extended by another three years.

About the position

  • The position is within the group “International & Comparative Media Research” headed by Frank Esser. IKMZ offers an excellent research and teaching environment, a broad range of work areas, and an inspiring intellectual climate.
  • The “International & Comparative Media Research” group fosters a culture of collaboration and mutual support, especially towards newcomers. It offers new members excellent opportunities for national and international networking.
  • This is a university-financed (not project-based) position as "Scientific Assistant in Research and Teaching"
  • The position is to be filled on January 1, 2022 or as agreed.
  • The position is temporary. Initially for 3 years; extension possible.
  • The employment level is initially 65%; increase possible over time.

Your main tasks

  • Collaborating in existing projects and developing new projects with members of the team.
  • Research and teaching in thematic areas as agreed, e.g., in innovative areas of political communication, digital journalism, changing user behaviors...
  • Developing a dissertation topic in consultation with team; completion within three to four years.
  • Teaching approximately one course per semester at BA level; not yet in first semester of employment.

Your profile

  • Excellent Master's degree in communication studies
  • Strong interest in international comparative aspects of communication research
  • Good knowledge of quantitative methods and data analysis (e.g., content analysis, surveys, experiments); interest in computer-based methods
  • Fluency in English is required, knowledge of German an advantage

Über die Position

  • Forschung und Lehre in Themenbereichen nach Absprache, z.B. in innovativen Bereichen der politischen Kommunikation, des digitalen Journalismus oder User Behavior.
  • Entwicklung eines Dissertationsthemas im Austausch mit Team; Abschluss innerhalb von drei bis vier Jahren
  • Lehre ca. eine Veranstaltung pro Semester auf BA-Stufe; noch nicht im ersten Anstellungssemester.

Ihr Profil

  • Ausgezeichneter Master-Abschluss in Kommunikationswissenschaft
  • Grosses Interesse an international vergleichenden Aspekten der Kommunikationsforschung
  • Gute Kenntnisse in quantitativen Methoden und Datenanalyse (z.B. Inhaltsanalyse, Umfragen, Experimente); Interesse an computergestützten Methoden
  • Fliessendes Englisch für Forschung, Deutschkenntnisse für Lehre
